Description

A recipe for fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth homemade yeast doughnuts that rival the famous Krispy Kreme originals. These doughnuts are made from a soft, enriched dough that is proofed, deep-fried to a golden brown, and completely coated in a classic sweet vanilla glaze while still warm.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Glaze:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk and granulated sugar. Sprinkle active dry yeast over the mixture and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the softened butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Roll out the dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into doughnut shapes using a doughnut cutter or two round cutters of different sizes.
  6. Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep fryer or large pot.
  7. Fry the doughnuts for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  8. In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the glaze.
  9. Dip each doughnut into the glaze, ensuring it’s fully coated, and place on a wire rack to set.
  10. Serve the homemade doughnuts warm.

Notes

  • Maintaining the oil temperature at 350°F is crucial; if it is too hot, the outside will burn before the inside cooks, and if too cool, the doughnuts will be greasy.
  • Glaze the doughnuts while they are still warm for the best texture and coating.
  • Don’t throw away the ‘holes’ cut from the centers; fry them separately for doughnut holes.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container, though they are best enjoyed fresh.
