Ingredients
Scale
For the Cookies:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground cloves
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup molasses
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Maple Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- 1–2 tablespoons milk or cream (adjust for consistency)
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Dough
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, beat softened butter and brown sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
- Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in molasses, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until a soft dough forms. Avoid overmixing.
- Chill the Dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 2 days). Chilling ensures the cookies hold their shape.
Step 2: Shape and Bake
- Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- Roll Out Dough: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the chilled dough to ¼-inch thickness.
- Cut Shapes: Use your favorite cookie cutters to create shapes like stars, trees, or gingerbread people.
- Bake: Place the cookies on prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.
- Cool: Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 3: Prepare the Maple Glaze
- Mix Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, maple syrup, and 1 tablespoon of milk or cream. Add more milk as needed to achieve a drizzle-able consistency.
- Glaze the Cookies: Once the cookies are completely cool, use a spoon or piping bag to drizzle the glaze over the cookies. Let the glaze set for 15-20 minutes before serving or storing.
Notes
Tips for Perfect Cookies
- Keep the Dough Cold: If the dough becomes too soft while rolling, place it back in the fridge for 10-15 minutes.
- Avoid Overbaking: These cookies are meant to stay soft, so remove them from the oven as soon as the edges are set.
- Adjust Glaze Thickness: If your glaze is too runny, add more powdered sugar. If it’s too thick, add a splash of milk.
