  • Author: Jessica

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) molasses
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Optional Add-Ins and Toppings

  • 1/2 cup (85g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Drizzle of white chocolate or royal icing for decoration

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pan

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper, leaving overhangs for easy removal.

Step 2: Combine Dry Ingredients

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together:
    • Flour
    • Ginger
    • Cinnamon
    • Nutmeg
    • Cloves
    • Baking powder
    • Salt
  2. Set the bowl aside.

Step 3: Mix Wet Ingredients

  1. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  3. Add the molasses and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.

Step 4: Combine and Add Mix-Ins

  1. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Stir just until combined—don’t overmix!
  2. If using, fold in the chocolate chips for added richness.

Step 5: Bake

  1. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  3. Remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool completely in the pan.

Step 6: Decorate and Serve

  1. Once cool, remove the brownies from the pan using the parchment paper overhangs.
  2. Dust the top with powdered sugar or drizzle with melted white chocolate for a festive touch.
  3. Slice into squares and serve.

Notes

Tips for Success

  • Don’t Overbake: Check your brownies a few minutes early to ensure they remain fudgy.
  • Mix-In Variations: Try chopped nuts, dried cranberries, or a sprinkle of sea salt on top for added texture and flavor.
  • Storage: Store the brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
