Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup flour (for dredging)
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Optional Add-Ins:
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (for firmer patties)
- 1 egg (to bind the meat mixture)
- A splash of Worcestershire sauce (for extra flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef Patties:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder (if using), thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well but avoid overworking the meat.
- Shape the mixture into 4-5 patties, about 1 inch thick.
- Dredge and Fry the Patties:
- Lightly coat each patty in flour, shaking off any excess.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook over medium heat until softened and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of flour into the skillet, stirring constantly to make a roux.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking to avoid lumps. Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.
- Combine and Simmer:
- Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce the heat to low and let them simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Serve:
- Serve the Amish Poor Man’s Steak hot, topped with the savory gravy. Pair it with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables for a comforting meal.
