Ultimate Guide to Best Homemade Sloppy Joes

  • Author: Jessica

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 burger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it into small crumbles with a spatula. Drain any excess grease.
  2. Add the onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until softened.
  3. Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well to combine.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Toast the burger buns lightly. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns, then top with the remaining halves.
  6. Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as coleslaw or potato chips.
